Despite its photo printing shortcomings, the Brother HL-3170CDW is a capable color laser printer that meets all the major requirements for a small office workgroup.

  • +

The Brother HL-3170CDW boasts office-friendly features like automatic double-sided printing, wireless and wired networking options, a generous monthly duty cycle, and two separate trays for standard and thicker-than-average paper.

  • -

The photo quality lacks detail and the fixed control panel can be awkward to operate.

The Brother HL-3170CDW color LED printer comes up a little short on output quality, but largely makes up for it with fast speed and good paper handling.

  • +

Fast. Duplexer (for two-sided printing). Ethernet and Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi Direct for easy connection to smartphones and tablets.

  • -

    Sub-par text and photo quality.

As we’ve said about several entry-level laser-class printers recently, this is overall a fine, serviceable printer. Our main concern is not necessarily about the quality of the HL-3170CDW itself, but instead about low-cost, personal color laser-class printers in general.

  • +

Speedy for the price, Automatic two-sided printing, Wide support for cloud and mobile-device printing

  • -

Subpar image printing, High CPP, Old-school control panel

The Good Quiet Flexible connectivity Duplex printing The Bad Subpar photo quality Large footprint We've mentioned before that we are far from a paperless society. For now, at least, there are tasks that require a piece of paper for confirmation, proof of purchase, or a litany of other needs.

  • +

    Quiet, Flexible connectivity, Duplex printing

  • -

    Subpar photo quality, Large footprint

OK, so the HL3170cdw isn’t an all-in-one. The company evidently felt this unit was destined to do just one thing: print wirelessly. Wi-Fi hooks the unit up to a network so you're able to connect multiple users to the machine, or you also have the luxury of printing directly from a mobile device,...

Conclusions This is a good printer that has earned a place on my network. It is not my only printer. The bulk of my day to day printing needs will continue to be handled by my seven year old monochrome Brother laser.

To its credit, Brother offers a little more than most competitors do. The warranty lasts only one year, but there's free phone support for as long as you own the product. Speed is excellent, and for text and spot colour the HL-3170CDW's print quality is fine. Toner costs are around average.

You want a colour laser printer, but you don’t have a lot of cash. How does $197 sound? That’s the price of the Brother HL-3170CDW, and in exchange it delivers reasonably good prints. Not pristine, evocative colour graphics – move on to another printer for that.

  • +

Low purchase price; good text quality

  • -

Colour graphics are mediocre; control pane lacks a menu button

The biggest downside to this printer is the cost of ink and the drums. Not only will you have to purchase new ink cartridges but the cartridges are placed in drums which will need replacing (though not as frequent as the ink).

  • +

    Prints quickly, easy to use

  • -

    expensive ink

I'd like to give the product a higher rating but I've had issues. The printer has physically worked OK, setup went well, the laser printer design is well done. However, my printed color output is washed-out as if the saturation has been removed and the blacks are not dark enough.

-well worth it. I print a lot and still haven't had to replace the original ink or toner. I purchased replacement cartridges just so I would be ready in a jam, but overall very satisfied. I don't have need for super high quality prints so I don't know how this would handle pictures.

  • +

-good prints. Using it in law school so I print a lot because I like to review and edit on actual paper. -color is great, I use highlighting to help in compiling research and it is very good there as well. highlighted text shows up clear and is still very legible.

  • -

-the drivers kind of suck to install. Just gotta track down the right one is all. -if using double sided printing, must have the printer on a hard surface. This may seem strange, but when printing double sided on the carpet the printer would jam.

This is a great printer for the price. It's easy to set up, use, and maintain. And the cost of toner sure beats the cost of ink. However, this does not produce high quality graphics. So, if you don't need high quality (like I don't for my usage), this is a great printer.

Other reviews had print time a bit slow but not mine. It is really fast, even for the first page. 4 stars is that the paper seems to curl a bit but it may be my cheap paper. I plan to try another brand next.

Our office has had this printer for only about 2 months now. We bought it to be used only for color printing, since our large copier/printer/scanner is black & white only. The print quality and speed are great for what we use it for (typically under 20 pages at a time).

I bought this at Sam's Club on line. I did a lot of research on printers. It turned out to be the best. It's a brother printer color laser printer. Sam's club had the best price. And brother printer has the best support. Plus warranty is great. Easy set up with DVD.

All the brother printers I've had over the years have been very reliable and the OEM supplies are economical. This printer continues that trend.
